about

An unreleased demo originating from 2013, 'Red Sky in Morning' (RSIM) was part of an incomplete collection of songs intended for release as an EP entitled 'Deserts'.

This song was partly inspired by the 'Red River phenomena' that was taking places in locations around the world at that time. Inexplicably, bodies of water were turning red.

The Beach Boys owned a holding company called 'Brother Records, Inc.' for their intellectual property rights. The branding insignia for this company is a picture of an Native American on horseback in supplication to the creator for the ongoing destruction of the environment.
It is a moving visual that also influenced this song.

Beach Boys songs like Till I Die and Surfs UP have had a profound influence on my music and I can hear them informing this song. During this time I was spinning a lot of Jonathon Wilson's "Gentle Spirit' LP rediscovering the music of America, Neil Young's 'On the Beach' & 'Zuma', Ry Cooder, Peter Green & Taj Mahal instrumentals.

Among many other gospel artists, I grew with Mahalia Jackson records being played in my home, which in turn affected personally and subsequently artistically. For instance, the great emancipation hymns of the 19 Century like "Down by the Riverside" (also known as "Ain't Gonna Study War No More" and "Gonna lay down my burden"). I had considered including a sample or a part in RSIM for the good studio version - as it had been rattling around my cranium when developing RSIM ... I don't know why....

This version of RSIP was humbly recorded with a couple Shure Sm 57s, and a 2 channel interface back when with the idea to rerecord the EP later, things changed and life happened.

Regardless, I've always liked this song, thought it very pertinent to current events and wanted to share it in all its rough and raw pre-production glory.

Enjoy

RED SKY IN MORNING
by COLIN WYLIE

WE GO DOWN BY THE WATERS EDGE

THEIR WILL I WAIT FOR YOU

LOOK NOW THE RIVERS RED

WE LOOK TO THE SKY FOR YOU

FUMBLING IN THE DARK

THERE'S NO HIDING PLACE BENEATH THE CLEFT OF THE ROCK

AND NO RETURNING

WHEN NO STRENGTH CAN FIND YOU

AND YOUR ONLY FAITH ANTICIPATES THE LOSS

AND LIFE’S SPURNING

WHEN THEY SEEM TO DELIGHT IN THE LOSS

AND YOU’RE WORTH A WAGE TO KEEP THEIR FAÇADE

BUT IT’S FADING FROM YOU

DOWN BY THE RIVERS EDGE, LORD I’LL WAIT ON YOU

STORM BY THE WATERS EDGE, LORD WHERE ARE YOU

HOLD BY THE RIVERS EDGE, LORD I’LL WAIT ON YOU

STUMBLING IN THE DARK

FOR A HIGHER PLACE THAT VINDICATES THE LOST

THAT ONE NEEDS

WHERE NO MISTAKES CAN FIND YOU

JUST A KIND FACE THAT CAN RELATE TO YOUR COST

AND KNOWS YOUR NEEDS

WHEN THEY GLEEM DELIGHT FROM A LOSS YOU DESERVE

TAKE COVER UNDER THE CROSS

BECAUSE IT’S RAINING AND I’M WAITING ON YOU

DOWN BY THE WATERS EDGE, LORD I’LL WAIT ON YOU

DELIVERANCE

LOOK NOW THE RIVERS RED, WE LOOK TO THE SKY FOR YOU

WE ONLY GET ONE TIME FOR ALL TIME

FROM A BITTER END

STORM BY THE WATERS EDGE

DELIVERANCE
